Monthly newsletter

We hope all of you are enjoying the fast approaching holiday season.  Please remember to send proper clothing for your child to go outside.

A big thank you for coming to parent-teacher conferences, I had 100% attendance in first grade.  I hope you learned a lot about my programs and your child’s progress.

Thank you to all the wonderful moms who made our Halloween party fun!!  We had a great time.

We will be working on writing a tribute to the Veterans for Veteran’s Day.   Our 5th grade friends helped us a lot.  Thank you!

We really had a lot of fun at the Q and U wedding.  They are so happy together.  The best part was the reception!!  The cookies and punch were tasty too.  I didn’t realize I had so many great dancers!

We want to thank the firefighters that came to our school on October 14.  The smoke house was pretty cool too.

As usual the students have been hard at work practicing their reading.  We have started our AR reading program.  Keep practicing at home.  Remember to fill out your monthly book log  and return it to school.  There are many different strategies that your child can use when they get stuck on a word.  Here are some strategies that might help:

  • Think about what you are reading and try a word that would make sense.

  • Look at the picture.

  • Read on for clues and go back and reread.

  • Sound it out or break the word into chunks.

  • Think about what you already know about a word-hopefully it will help you solve it

  • Once your child figured out the unknown word, be sure to have your child go back and reread the whole sentence for comprehension.  This is not a simple task.  The more we read the better we will become.  So practice, practice, practice.

  • Thanks so much for helping your child!!

This month we will be learning about the Pilgrims and the American Indians.  We will be doing a lot of fun activities.

Thank you for helping your child every night with their homework.  Math,

Reading, and Spelling are important parts of first grade learning.  It helps us when we have parents that work with their child.  Please remember to read every day with your child.  As the weather gets colder, curl up with your child and share a good book.

                                                     Thank you,

                                                      Mrs. Lawler
