With any luck, as you are reading this spring will be around the corner and days filled with sunshine are ahead of us.  First graders predicted whether the groundhog will see his shadow or not.  We will wait to find out the answer.

We celebrated 100 days of school on January 31.  We did several activities celebrating 100 days of learning.

We have finished the January benchmarks.  I will let you know the results.  It will probably come home in your child’s report card as a midterm report.  Remember, we test benchmarks and aimsweb again in May.  These are the minimum requirements to go on to second grade.  If you have any questions or concerns please let us know.

In reading we are building our sight word vocabulary and working hard on reading fluency and comprehension.  We have done a lot with the setting, character, problem and solution of a story.  First Grade loves reading for the Accelerated Reader program.  The students are continuing to work hard to earn points for each test taken.  I would love to thank all the parent and grandparent helpers!!!

We are almost finished with our Young Author Books.  This takes a lot of time and energy.  Wait until you read these awesome stories!

In Math the students continue to work hard on addition and subtraction. As well as counting by twos, counting money, place value, patterns, measuring, story problems and telling time.  They are really working hard on these skills. Thanks for the time spent at home completing homework.  It really pays off!

We have also learned about penguins.  Did you know that they only live south of the equator?  We also read and discussed Martin Luther King Jr. and why the civil rights movement was so important to our country.  We shared our dreams for a more peaceful environment.

Congratulations to Griffin McPeek and Oakley Miller for winning our classroom spelling bee.  They competed against the other grades on Tuesday, January 24.  What a great experience!

We will be learning about Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, and Ruby Bridges.  We will also be learning about our heart and how it works, how to take care of our teeth, and celebrating the Chinese New Year.

We are looking forward to our Valentine’s Day party on Tuesday, Feb. l4.

Spring pictures will be on Wednesday, February 22, 2023.

We look forward to the upcoming school events.  Please check your calendar or newsletters for upcoming dates.

Thank you to all the parents who have volunteered in any way and we appreciate everything you do!
